No Rematch!

In a stunning turn of events, Oklahoma State will face LSU in the BCS Championship Game on Jan. 9, not Alabama, as had been widely believed until the wee hours Saturday night.

The final BCS Standings will be close between OSU and Alabama, with the computers locking in the Cowboys at No. 2 and Alabama at No. 3. And then it would be up to the voters to render their final verdict.

More of them will still have Alabama at No. 2, in both the coaches and Harris polls, but OSU's edge in the computers will be enough to overcome the Crimson Tide's advantage in the two human polls.

A few things that happened tonight turned the tide:

* Oklahoma State's impressive victory over Oklahoma was a resounding statement. The Cowboys proved that not only they could score, but they could play sound defense and cause game-changing turnovers.

* Virginia Tech's blowout loss against Clemson removed a direct competitor for the precious No. 2 votes, not to mention the all-important No. 3 votes. Remember, OSU was No. 5 in both polls coming into Saturday night's game.

* CBS's shameless and disingenuous cheerleading for Alabama ultimately will prove to have done more harm to the Tide than help. If CBS had done nothing, it's likely it wouldn't have caused enough voters to have such a revulsion to decline an LSU-Alabama rematch. Whereas Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson definitely made the difference in Florida's favor in 2006, the opposite must be said in this case.

* Finally, the fact that the only other worthy 1-loss teams: Alabama, Stanford and Boise State all failed to win their respective conferences bolstered OSU's case. Even though the BCS never made that a requirement to reach the title game, many voters would like to consider that a prerequisite.

So that's the shocking conclusion to this strange regular season that really proved that LSU is unquestionably the best team in the land. But because of the system that we have, the Tigers will have to play one more game to make it official. They're probably glad that it won't be the Crimson Tide.

There will be more drama beyond the unveiling of the participants in the BCS title game. For my complete analysis see here at SB Nation.

Here's the projected final BCS Standings:

1. LSU, 2. Oklahoma State, 3. Alabama, 4. Stanford, 5. Oregon, 6. Boise State, 7. Arkansas, 8. Kansas State, 9. South Carolina, 10. Wisconsin, 11. Baylor, 12. Virginia Tech, 13. Michigan, 14. Houston, 15. Oklahoma, 16. Michigan State, 17. Clemson, 18. TCU, 19. Georgia, 20. Nebraska.

And the projected BCS bowl matchups:

BCS Championship: LSU (SEC champion, No. 1) vs. Oklahoma State (Big 12 champion, No. 2)

Rose Bowl: Oregon (Pac-12 champion) vs. Wisconsin (Big Ten champion)

Sugar Bowl: Alabama (at-large) vs. Stanford (at-large)

Fiesta Bowl: Kansas State (at-large) vs. Michigan (at-large)

Orange Bowl: Clemson (ACC champion) vs. West Virginia (Big East champion)

You're already wrong on one thing. 1 computer already has bama at #2. The Sagarin.

Gary Danielson has been saying for WEEKS that he doesn't think there should be a rematch. Plus, I don't remember him nor Lundquist shilling for Alabama at all during the SECCG.

only LOSERS want a rematch

This is fucking trash and you're basing your analysis on your own personal feelings instead of what is likely to occur.

Bama being #1 in one poll doesn't matter, high and low are tossed, average of the rest. So... yeah

I simply cannot wait for LSU to dismantle the pokes. The BCS once again shows its ugly face. Without a playoff system we will never know a true national champion, its always a matter of who should have been playing that final game.

Clearly Lsu is going to be the true national champion after winning the National Championship

Wrong, Wrong, Wrong. OK State loss to Iowa State! Beat A&M by only 1 and Kansas State by only a TD and Bama had 1 loss to LSU and no close games. Sagarin already have Alabama # 2. Did you see that?

Anonymous said...

I certainly hope you are right. It will be good to see a real offense go up against LSU. Although I don't think Oklahoma State is up to beating LSU with that much time for teams to prepare, it's much better than sitting through another LSU-Alabama game.

Sadly, we'll only be able to speculate what might've happened had Bama gotten a shot against LSU.

Yeah, listened to the CBS drivel all night long tonight before, during, and after the game as if Alabama had already been announced into the BCSNC. Wanted to puke.

SEC Championship Games show that rematches are never like the first meetings. Good coaches learn from what went right and wrong and form different game plans. The rematch would not be a 9-6 game.

Also, Danielson and Brando have been the biggest critics of a rematch, especially on Brando's radio show. I think CBS hates the idea of an LSU-BAMA BCSCG getting good ratings on ESPN. People post they will not watch it, but they will and ESPN will get very good numbers.

I have to agree with this article on every point. Many coaches and writers proclaimed Alabama #2 because the media had written OSU off as already losing to the Sooners. The computers will jump idle Alabama because of SOS. Victory margin doesn't mean anything. A win is a win. Just like a loss at home to #1 is a loss, not a quality win, Tide fans.
'Bama has no resume for SOS or quality wins. All they keep proclaiming is that their loss is better than anyone elses, and that everyone else had their shot at a title game. Poor argument. Sadly ESPN and the rest of the writers have bought this argument till OSU walloped some sense into the pollsters. POKES ARE IN.....from a Duck fan. Trust me, Bama fans we know when we lose, we just don't deny it. Remember Utah?

1. How can anyone dispute that the CBS announcers today wanted a rematch? I'm not an Oklahoma State fan, but there were a ton of comments pushing against them. One of them was something like, "At least in 2006 there was Florida, this year there is only Oklahoma State."

2. So what if rematches can be different? Alabama had the chance to beat LSU at home. They lost. If they now beat LSU on a neutral field, the series is 1-1 with LSU winning on the road and Alabama winning a neutral site game. How does that make Alabama the champion? Oklahoma State might not be #2, but at least if they win, they are clearly #1.

3. I agree with the analysis. Remember how hard voters worked against a rematch in 2006. Michigan was still #2 after playing Ohio State, but the next week USC moved into that place and when they lost, voters moved Florida up. Last week, Alabama was 2, but voters against a rematch hadn't united on a candidate. Now with the win over Oklahoma and clearly being the top alternative many will. Combined with computer ranking, it will probably be just enough to avoid a rematch just like in 2006. In both years, most would think the best 2 are in the same conference, but will want to avoid a rematch.

Looking at the computer polls, this article should be very accurate in claiming OSU has the edge in these specific ratings.

Sagarin may have 'bama #2, but that isn't enough to hold #2 in the computers. Mainly because the BCS ratings drop the high and low computer ranking.

OSU is either going to hold a 3-1 or 4-0 edge over 'bama in 2 vs 3 place ranking in the computers. If the two human polls make it a tight race, then guru may be right on.

OSU will need something like 38% of the human voters to put them at #2 in order to make it to the title game. Unlikely, but plausible.

Here is the thing. Even if the computers put OK State above Alabama - that's 1 position on 1 of 3 components, and the win won't give OK State enough of a pop to put any more of a significant difference between them there than before. For them to move to number 2, based on the numbers from previous weeks... the AVERAGE change in the Harris and coach's poll has to be at least a change of 2 relative positions between the 2 teams. That means that EVERY voter has to make that much of a change, or for every one that doesn't shift Alabama down... someone else has to shift Alabama down further. With Alabama being a near unanimous number 2 last week, do you really think that many voters will make such a drastic change? Will that many really shift them below OK State... or even further down past Stanford or BSU to make it happen? I kind of doubt it.

Remember, this is supposed to be about putting the two best teams in the game, not about what game people want to see. I certainly hope the pollsters are smart enough to not put a team that loses to a 4 TD dog in the game over someone that only lost to the current #1... and only then in overtime.

I respect BCS GURU's predictions. This site has been very good in it's past analysis and assumptions; however, I believe this post is flawed in its assumptions.

The GURU is over estimating Oklahoma State's edge in the computers. Oklahoma State will end up at .950 (at best) and Alabama will end up at .930 (at worst). LSU's victory over Georgia will strengthen Alabama's "quality of loss." Oklahoma State will benefit from the win over Oklahoma but the win is not a "game changer" in the statistical arena because Oklahoma is now a three-loss team.

Because the separation in the computers will be so minute, the BCS title game will be largely decided by the human polls. Alabama will only need 50 to 60 percent of the second place votes in the human polls. It is highly improbable that the voters will flip flop Oklahoma St. for Alabama because Oklahoma State's loss to Iowa St. was so bad. Alabama's loss was to a very dominant number one team in overtime; furthermore, many people want the rematch - so that is what you will see on Jan. 9th.

All this talk about Alabama's already lost, excuse me but hasn't Oklahoma State lost?? OSU lost to an unranked team while Alabama lost to the #1 team. Yes, Bama has accepted loss so that's not a valid argument but an emotional one. The fact is OSU lost to a terrible team so that loss is much worse. Going into last night OSU had the #107!! Ranked defense in the country. Really??! And they should get another chance?? I know people hate facts so I'll throw some emotion in, Bama would destroy OSU. OSU in the SEC is probably equivalent to Arkansas, which Bama beat 42-17.

In 2006, Michigan lost by 3 points to Ohio State (in the then Game of the Century) on the road and didn't immediately lose the #2 spot. The Big Ten was at that point regarded as far and away the best conference at the top that year (Wisconsin was also very highly rated). They ended up losing the spot to a Florida team that lost at home to Auburn.

Honestly how much different is this year? The Big 12 is regarded well (#1 or #2 conference behind the SEC), Alabama lost a 3 point game to LSU while Oklahoma State lost a close one to Iowa State.

What's really different that justified putting Florida in then, but not Oklahoma State now?

Oklahoma St. should at least get a chance to play LSU for the title. Alabama had their chance and lost. Why should a team be rewarded for losing basically. Alabama gets to play for the BCS National Championship while sitting at home while LSU and Oklahoma St. play for conference titles. What does that say. A team that already lost to the number one team in the country on their home field gets a rematch because they only loss by 3 points and because they out gained the team by 50 yards. What does that say about the BCS.

It occurs to me as I read all of this, neither Alabama nor Oklahoma State has much right to complain if they don't get in. Unlike in other sports, what makes college football special, is there is no room for error. You lose 1 game and you don't deserve deserve to play for the championship.

Fortunately for Alabama and Oklahoma State, LSU was the only team to outright earn a spot in the championship game so one of them will get in. Neither has much of a gripe considering they didn't take care of business though.

Bama beat no one this year. The SEC has one school ranked in the top HALF of college football in offense. Their schedule is a joke for a title contender.

BTW, catching a pass thrown into double coverage doesn't make a defense great. Bama is overrated at 3. www.ramblingpoke.com

Mark Schlabach has changed his projections again following the release of the Coaches Poll. He now has TCU in the Sugar Bowl vs. Michigan.

Sagarin has Texas A & M in the top 14. What a joke.

The top two teams may wind up playing for the national championship, I'm not sure, but the BCS system is terribly flawed. Nothing shows that more than a 10 - 3 ACC Champ going to the Orange Bowl!

ARKANSAS #7 NO BCS!!!! THAT IS SOME BS!!!

LOL at you. I think you have to turn in your Guru card...

Well ... Sorry about you getting a little egg on your face. It was very bold of you to go on record to predict OKST going in front of Alabama. At least you got alot of website traffic!!!!

Wrong.

So much for your prediction. The Iowa State game was too much to overcome.

Boy did you blow this one. First you tell us last year the SEC reign is over and now this. This is "Dewey Defeats Truman," and I won't be back after this flop.

You guys might want to take this article down. It just makes you look stupid.

Anonymous said...

Congrats on getting 45% of your predictions right. You're a prick for claiming to be a guru.

Anonymous said...

This "Guru" is a complete joke. He is probably some very alone, mid aged, low to mid income accountant. I am neither a Alabama fan or OK State but your a idiot. Your services are no longer needed.

Thanks!

BCS guru my a$$. What a fricking idiot. I don't know who the bigger idiots are...this clown or all the sheep who quoted him.

Samuel Chi...is that your real name? What an utter fool.

ZERO CREDIBILITY ON THIS SITE. What kind of "guru" proclaims as fact something that's a lie. Every real "guru" aka Brad Edwards ESPN and Jerry Palm CBS CORRECTLY predicted Alabama.

Anonymous said...

Got it wrong. It'll be LSU & Bama for the championship game. Some Guru you are.

Anonymous said...

You were right, but proven wrong. Go ahead and put the BS back in BCS. Until there's a playoff, that's all the BCS has!

Bill Brown said...

Ok I did come back but that's because I'm shocked this is still up here. Did the "Bubu" commit suicide?

There is only one reason Oklahoma State and for that matter Stanford could never beat LSU. They will never get the chance to play them. Oh yes Alabama beat leass than 1/2 of the top 10 schools that Oklahoma did this year. I think they also scored the least amount of points on LSU of any team. It would have been great to split the SEC up to really see how good or overrated they are.

In a word, VRLA battery features create super advantage condition for telecommunication, electrical power, information, finance and so on modern science ups replacement batterymanagement. Because water filling and proportionMF car battery testing is no required, and VRLA gel battery only needs to inspect the change of voltage and capacity of charging and discharging. And it is able to realize the microprocessor control with no person watching.

All you pussies that are against the rematch must not want to see what is clearly the two best teams play. Oklahoma State is about the equivalent of Arkansas, good offense, shitty defense, and see how both Alabama and LSU bitch slapped Arkansas. I would not be at all surprised to see Stanford beat Ok. State. Stanford's only loss was to a good Oregon team, not a mediocre Iowa State team.
